General Tech Tips for Online Learning Success

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Even with the right device and software, students need a few essential digital skills to thrive in an online school environment. These habits and tools will help your student stay organized, troubleshoot independently, and get the most out of their learning experience.

Tech Skills Every Student Should Know

  • Copy & Paste:
Learn how to quickly copy text (Ctrl+C / Cmd+C) and paste it (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V). This makes it easy to grab links, move text into assignments, or save important info.
    Taking Screenshots:
Screenshots are useful for capturing directions, saving feedback, or showing tech support what you’re seeing.

    • Windows: Press Windows + Shift + S
      Mac: Press Command + Shift + 4

    • Chromebook: Press Ctrl + Show Windows (rectangle with 2 lines)

  • Using Bookmarks:
Bookmark your most-used websites (like Sora Home, Google Drive, and the Knowledge Hub) so they’re always just one click away.
Right-click the tab or click the star icon in the browser bar to save a site.

  • Managing Tabs:
Keep your tabs organized! Too many open tabs can slow down your device. Consider closing unused ones and using tab groups or bookmarks for later.

  • Using Split Screen or Dual Monitors:
It can help to have your notes open on one side of the screen while you watch a class or work on an assignment.

    • On most computers, drag a window to one side of the screen to activate split screen.

  • Logging Into the Browser:
Make sure you’re signed into Google Chrome with your school account so that your bookmarks, extensions, and history are always available — even if you switch computers.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts to Know:

    • Undo: Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z

    • Redo: Ctrl+Y / Cmd+Shift+Z

    • Search page: Ctrl+F / Cmd+F

    • New tab: Ctrl+T / Cmd+T

Tips for Staying Organized

  • Use Google Calendar to keep track of classes and deadlines.

  • Check your email and Schoology notifications regularly for school updates and feedback from teachers.

  • Keep your desktop tidy by putting files into folders (e.g., “Math,” “Projects,” “To Turn In”).

  • Charge your device overnight so you're always ready for class.

  • Ask for help early — if you’re stuck, reach out to your teacher or tech support.
