Technology Requirements & Guidelines for the Sora Program

Updated over 4 months ago

To successfully participate in Sora’s online program, students must have access to appropriate technology and a learning environment that supports their focus and growth.

Reach out to [email protected] with any questions!

Hardware and Operating System Minimum Recommendations

Students need a computer to successfully participate in the Sora program. The minimum hardware recommendations for the Sora Program are as follows:

Chromebooks

A TCA-provided Chromebook should have Zoom already installed on the device. If you have any problems with this, please reach out to [email protected].

School-provisioned Chromebooks are supported for use in the Sora program and will be pre-configured by our IT team. These devices are managed with school accounts and set up to work with all required platforms.

Helpful Tips for Chromebook Use:

  • Be sure your student logs in with their school-managed account to access all tools.

  • Keep the Chromebook updated and restarted regularly.

  • Enable any required Chrome extensions during onboarding.

Windows

  • Operating System: Windows 7+ (Windows 10+ recommended)
CPU: Intel/AMD processor with OpenGL 4.4 / DirectX12 level GPU

  • RAM: 4GB of RAM
Storage: 10 GB of free storage space

  • Recommended Browser: Google Chrome

macOS

  • Operating System: macOS 10.11+ (macOS 10.14+ recommended)

  • CPU: Intel processor with OpenGL 4.4 / DirectX12 level GPU (Apple M-series chips work too)

  • RAM: 4GB of RAM

  • Storage: 10 GB of free storage space

  • Recommended Browser: Google Chrome or Safari

Internet Connection

Sora recommends a broadband connection of at least 10 Mbps to properly access Sora’s learning resources.

You can check your connection speed here:https://www.speedtest.net

Wi-Fi Tips & Troubleshooting

A strong and stable internet connection is critical to your student’s success. Here are a few tips if you experience Wi-Fi issues:

  • Place the device near your Wi-Fi router to improve signal strength.
If possible, use a wired Ethernet connection for maximum reliability.

  • Consider using a Wi-Fi extender if the school workspace is far from your router.

  • Restart your router weekly to maintain performance.

  • If your home frequently experiences connectivity issues, consider contacting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to discuss options for increasing bandwidth or improving coverage.

Mobile Devices for Learning at Sora

Mobile devices such as tablets and phones cannot be used as a primary device because they do not support all necessary software.

However, mobile devices can serve as a companion tool for light tasks such as checking notifications, reviewing materials, or viewing schedules. All core coursework and live sessions should be done from the student’s primary school-supported computer.

Software Needed on Day 1

Before your student’s first day, make sure the following are ready to go:

  • Google/Gmail: Login credentials will be emailed to the parent/guardian. Please log in and save the password somewhere safe.

  • Dedicated School Browser: Your student should use a browser that is only used for schoolwork, signed in with their school account (not personal email accounts). This keeps school tools and access smooth and prevents login issues.

  • Zoom: Test Zoom out to ensure it can open and connect to meetings. Students will use a tcadocs.com Zoom account managed by the Classical Academies' IT team to join House Meetings and Expeditions.

Workspace Requirements

Students should have a quiet, distraction-free area set aside for schoolwork. This space should ideally include:

  • A table or desk with an appropriately sized chair

  • Access to power for charging their device

  • Good lighting and low background noise

  • A setup where students can be fully present for live video sessions

School Materials and Supplies

As is typical in any school, your student may need specific materials to complete their work and participate in projects. Families are expected to cover the cost of these items.

📦 You can find a starter pack materials list linked here to help you prepare before school begins. Additional supplies may be needed during the year, depending on your student’s classes and interests.

Platforms Used at Sora

Sora uses a curated set of digital platforms that are required for student participation. These tools are integrated into our curriculum and support students in learning, collaboration, and project work. These programs include:

  • Google Suite

  • Rosetta Stone

  • Zoom

  • Overdrive (assigned eBooks for STEM/humanities)

  • Gizmos (STEM)

  • IXL (Math)

  • Canva (Design)

  • Newsela (humanities)

  • Nearpod (STEM/humanities)

Families are welcome to supplement with additional resources or educational apps outside of school hours, but students must use the core platforms provided by Sora for academic success.

Guides for using these platforms are available year-round in Sora’s Knowledge Hub.
